Couples Therapy in Etobicoke and Online, Gottman Method

All services and pricing

Most couples wait about six years too long before they get help. By then the same fight has happened a few hundred times and both people are tired. You do not have to be at that point to come in. Couples therapy works better earlier, and it works for couples who are basically fine but stuck on one thing.

I'm trained in the Gottman Method, which is the approach with the strongest research behind it for predicting what makes relationships last. It is practical. You leave with things to do, not just things to think about.

Who this is for

Couples who keep having the same argument. Couples where one person has pulled away and the other cannot reach them. Couples rebuilding after a breach of trust. Couples navigating ADHD in the relationship, where one partner feels like the manager and the other feels like the child. Couples who are doing well and want a tune-up before a big change like marriage, a move, or a baby. Married, common-law, dating, any configuration.

What sessions look like

The first session is together. Then I typically meet each of you once on your own, then we come back together and I share what I see and what we will work on. From there, sessions focus on specific skills: how to raise a problem without it turning into a fight, how to repair after it does, how to actually hear each other. 90-minute sessions are recommended for couples work because 60 minutes goes fast when there are two of you.

Pricing

60 minutes: $190. 90 minutes: $285. HST-exempt. Insurance coverage varies for couples work; some plans cover it under one partner's psychotherapy benefit. I provide receipts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Gottman Method?

An approach to couples therapy built on four decades of research into what separates couples who stay together from couples who split. It focuses on concrete skills: managing conflict, building friendship and trust, and creating shared meaning. Less "tell me about your childhood," more "here is what to do the next time this comes up."

My partner does not want to come. Can I come alone?

Yes. Individual sessions focused on the relationship still help, and often the reluctant partner joins later once they see something is changing.

Does couples therapy mean the relationship is failing?

No. Plenty of couples come in with a solid relationship and one recurring problem they cannot solve on their own. Getting help early is the thing that keeps it from becoming a bigger problem.

How long does couples therapy take?

Many couples see real change in 8 to 12 sessions. Rebuilding after a serious breach of trust usually takes longer. We set goals in the first few sessions so you know what you are working toward.

Is online couples therapy awkward?

Less than people expect. You are in your own space, which some couples find easier than an office. Both of you join from the same screen or separate ones. If you would rather be in a room, in-person sessions are available in Etobicoke.
